786 BBS is major milestone in bringing the benefits of connectivity to public at a time when modems were generally considered ‘not workable’ on the PTC phone lines. The BBS started with a single phone line. A 2400 baud non-error correcting modem was considered adequate. 786 became so popular that the only phone line remained busy many a times. Then came the second phone line and the facility to read mail off-line which considerably reduced the on-line time. 786 BBS provided the computer community of Karachi a place where they can talk, exchange views, make friends, share software and much more. In fact it were the people that made the 786 BBS so rich in its environment. The BBS now has five telephone lines. Ever since Digicom launched its On-line Internet access the popularity of the 786 BBS was overshadowed by the WWW and FTP services. 786 BBS still enjoys a large membership and a lot shareware software to download. The BBS also has Internet E-mail facility and ILINK Newsfeeds. Sysop: Shabbir Damani, Co-sysop: Javed Khamisani |
